Taqiyya — Religious Deception

Saturday

The following is a chapter of Islam 101:

Due to the state of war between dar al-Islam and dar al-harb, ruses of war, i.e., systematic lying to the infidel, must be considered part and parcel of Islamic tactics. The parroting by Muslim organizations throughout dar al-harb that "Islam is a religion of peace," or that the origins of Muslim violence lie in the unbalanced psyches of particular individual "fanatics," must be considered as disinformation intended to induce the infidel world to let down its guard.

Of course, individual Muslims may genuinely regard their religion as "peaceful" — but only insofar as they are ignorant of its true teachings, or in the sense of the Egyptian theorist Sayyid Qutb, who posited in his Islam and Universal Peace that true peace would prevail in the world just as soon as Islam had conquered it.

A telling point is that, while Muslims who present their religion as peaceful abound throughout dar al-harb, they are nearly non-existent in dar al-Islam. A Muslim apostate once suggested to me a litmus test for Westerners who believe that Islam is a religion of "peace" and "tolerance": try making that point on a street corner in Ramallah, or Riyadh, or Islamabad, or anywhere in the Muslim world. He assured me you wouldn't live five minutes.

{A} problem concerning law and order {with respect to Muslims in dar al-harb} arises from an ancient Islamic legal principle — that of taqiyya, a word the root meaning of which is "to remain faithful" but which in effect means "dissimulation." It has full Quranic authority (3:28 and 16:106) and allows the Muslim to conform outwardly to the requirements of unislamic or non-Islamic government, while inwardly "remaining faithful" to whatever he conceives to be proper Islam, while waiting for the tide to turn. (Hiskett, Some to Mecca Turn to Pray, 101.)

Volume 4, Book 52, Number 269; Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: The Prophet said, "War is deceit."

Historically, examples of taqiyya include permission to renounce Islam itself in order to save one's neck or ingratiate oneself with an enemy.

It is not hard to see that the implications of taqiyya are insidious in the extreme: they essentially render negotiated settlement — and, indeed, all veracious communication between dar al-Islam and dar al-harb — impossible. It should not, however, be surprising that a party to a war should seek to mislead the other about its means and intentions.

Jihad Watch's Hugh Fitzgerald sums up taqiyya and kitman, a related form of deception.

"Taqiyya" is the religiously-sanctioned doctrine, with its origins in Shi'a Islam but now practiced by non-Shi'a as well, of deliberate dissimulation about religious matters that may be undertaken to protect Islam, and the Believers. A related term, of broader application, is "kitman," which is defined as "mental reservation." An example of "Taqiyya" would be the insistence of a Muslim apologist that "of course" there is freedom of conscience in Islam, and then quoting that Qur'anic verse — "There shall be no compulsion in religion." {2:256} But the impression given will be false, for there has been no mention of the Muslim doctrine of abrogation, or naskh, whereby such an early verse as that about "no compulsion in religion" has been canceled out by later, far more intolerant and malevolent verses. In any case, history shows that within Islam there is, and always has been, "compulsion in religion" for Muslims, and for non-Muslims.

"Kitman" is close to "taqiyya," but rather than outright dissimulation, it consists in telling only a part of the truth, with "mental reservation" justifying the omission of the rest. One example may suffice. When a Muslim maintains that "jihad" really means "a spiritual struggle," and fails to add that this definition is a recent one in Islam (little more than a century old), he misleads by holding back, and is practicing "kitman."

When he adduces, in support of this doubtful proposition, the hadith in which Muhammad, returning home from one of his many battles, is reported to have said (as known from a chain of transmitters, or isnad), that he had returned from "the Lesser Jihad to the Greater Jihad" and does not add what he also knows to be true, that this is a "weak" hadith, regarded by the most-respected muhaddithin as of doubtful authenticity, he is further practicing "kitman."

In times when the greater strength of dar al-harb necessitates that the jihad take an indirect approach, the natural attitude of a Muslim to the infidel world must be one of deception and omission.

Revealing frankly the ultimate goal of dar al-Islam to conquer and plunder dar al-harb when the latter holds the military trump cards would be strategic idiocy.

Fortunately for the jihadists, most infidels do not understand how one is to read the Quran, nor do they trouble themselves to find out what Muhammad actually did and taught, which makes it easy to give the impression through selective quotations and omissions that "Islam is a religion of peace."

Any infidel who wants to believe such fiction will happily persist in his mistake having been cited a handful of Meccan verses and told that Muhammad was a man of great piety and charity. Digging only slightly deeper is sufficient to dispel the falsehood.

Quranic verses 3:28 and 16:106, as well as Muhammad’s famous assertion, “War is deceit,” have all led to the formulation of a number of doctrines of dissimulation — the most notorious among them being the doctrine of “Taqiyya,” which permits Muslims to lie and dissemble whenever they are under the authority of the infidel. Deception has such a prominent role that renowned Muslim scholar Ibn al-Arabi declares: “In the Hadith, practicing deceit in war is well demonstrated. Indeed, its need is more stressed than the need for courage.”

Raymond Ibrahim has written about taqiyya in his article, "A Response to the Critics: Taqiyya Revisited." Read it here:

Thanks for having this up. I
have several followers of my
blog who just this week asked
me for a good description of
taqiyya. I have yet to find
much courage in islam or the
writings. Seems that they would
rather use deceptions and other
distasteful tactics rather than
manning up or growing a pair.

Someone just emailed this comment:

I was recently engaged in a discussion with a muslim about Taqiyya where he rather aggressively asserted that Taqiyya only exists as a SHIA concept and not one shared by Sunni. Although I am quite aware it is a concept shared and used by both sects, it was interesting to see how he asserted this and was demanding scholarly sources for the justifications for using Taqiyya and Kitman. I found a good source with cited hadiths and quranic quotes.

As you can see the author has other motives for revealing the use of Taqiyya by Sunni Muslims. The point of it is that both sects have been revealed the use of Taqiyya and one does not have a monopoly over its use. This should be sufficient information to debate someone who is arguing the point that only Shia are permitted to use Taqiyya. This page shows that BOTH are permitted to use Taqiyya.

Keep up the good work

In a previous post at a Citizen Warrior site I referred to the idea of a "Kaa of Islam" - (based on the Kipling character, Kaa The Snake, that mesmerised its prey into submission in the Jungle Book).

Taqiyya is indeed Kaa!

This whole concept and practice leads me to believe that the Inquisition began in Spain in response, almost immediately after the Spanish succeeded in conquering and expelling the muslims. the brutality of the Inquisition grew as it found how out insidious 'taqiyya' was.

Citizen Warrior 1:21 AM

You could be right. And also the brutality of the Inquisition might have been because those in power learned a thing or two about forcing conversion from the Muslims occupying Spain for so long.

Wow! I'm amazed at this post. I've studied Islam all my life and never heard the concept of Taqiya.

I can say one thing for sure. Your translation of Muhammad's words "War is deceit" is incorrect. The correct translation is "War is deception". The context of the saying is the same as that espoused by Sun Tzu - when you are near, appear to the enemy that you are far... etc. Its about strategy during warfare and has nothing to do with lying speech

On the topic of lying here's what Muhammad did say, and I'm paraphrasing, Always speak the truth, even if harms you. In essence, lying is forbidden, period. Islam is no different from the other major religions on the need for every human being to be truthful.

Pure Security, you are using Taqiyya now, in your post. Of course a muslim would never lie! Because Muhammad said not to! Also, islam is not like other major religions, it is a cult of hatred, murder, abuse, lies, not peaceful etc. How easily amazed you are! I think you have been studying islam all your life and are well acquainted with the evil that is the mandate of this cult.

Anonymous is deceitful too. Christianity is not a religion of hate, etc. It is not even a religion like most theocracies. I suspect it is people like Anonymous that can never differentiate because there is no love in their being. Hate and love is all the same to him. It is just how he tends to use it, as he has done in his post.

Thank you for everything! Hello from Russia, we have big problems with islam here. I read all your articles, and then post them on my Telegram channel and in social networks, so that in Russia they know what islam is.

Citizen Warrior 11:56 AM

Hello from the United States, we don't hear much about problems with Islam in Russia, so thank you for letting us know. Thank you also for sharing this material on other networks.

Major terrorist attacks in Russia are the explosion in the St. Petersburg metro in 2017, then 14 people were killed. Knife attack in Surgut, a city in Siberia, then 7 people were wounded. Also in 2017. We have practically no independent press, so the media hardly write about the terrorist attacks. A few days ago, a bus exploded in the city of Voronezh, 2 people were killed, several people were badly injured. The authorities said it was not a terrorist attack.

Such Islamic colonization of France by those Those scheming stealth jihadist /Muslims who attempt to have Sharia law set up in America engage in the doctrines of the Islamic doctrine of Taqiyya which is very insidious. Taqyyia is the jihad dogma that deception is a good thing to do as long as it’s done for the advancement of Islam. Nevertheless, the God of the Bible “condemns those who devise wicked schemes…” Proverbs 12:11. [N.I.V.]
Likewise, Proverbs 12:20 teaches “Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil.”

WalterSieruk 11:41 AM

Some of the jihad-minded Muslims use the strategy that is the Islamic doctrine of Taqiyya in the stealth jihad for Islam. Taqiyya is the Islamic dogma that deception is a good ploy as long as it’s done for the advancement of Islam. Therefore, about those who engage in deception the Bible informs its readers that “Enemies disguised themselves with their lips. Proverbs 26:24. Further in the same chapter of Proverbs [v.26 ] teaches Their malice may be concealed by deception.” [N.I.V.] In conclusion .let’s not be beguiled to the sly and insidious Muslim methods of Taqiyya.

One of the most unusual articles on CitizenWarrior.com is Pleasantville and Islamic Supremacism.

It illustrates the Islamic Supremacist vision by showing the similarity between what happened in the movie, Pleasantville, and what devout fundamentalist Muslims are trying to create in Islamic states like Syria, Pakistan, or Saudi Arabia (and ultimately everywhere in the world).
